Abstract

Au XIIe siècle, la cour sicilienne du roi normand Roger II est un véritable lieu de rencontre entre le monde byzantin, le monde arabe et le monde latin, ce qui fait de Palerme un important centre de production et de transmission de savoirs scientifiques et philosophiques. Sur un tel cadre se penche le présent ouvrage, focalisé sur le travail d’Al-idrisi, géographe et cartographe à la cour de Roger II, auteur d’un traité – décrivant le monde d’une perspective physique et humaine – connu comme le « Livre de Roger ». L'analyse des écrits d’Al-idrisi et de ses rapports avec Roger II met en évidence le caractère original et novateur de l’œuvre de ce savant par rapport aux traditions géographiques arabe et grecque, dont il dépasse l’héritage pour proposer une vision du monde, à l’époque, encore inédite.
