Abstract

Il virus della malattia di Aujeszky (Aujeszky’s Disease Virus, ADV), denominato anche virus della pseudorabbia (Pseudorabies Virus, PRV), ha uno spettro d’ospite molto ampio, essendo in grado di infettare quasi tutti i mammiferi ad eccezione dei primati superiori. Tuttavia, solo i suini (domestici e selvatici) sono in grado di sopravvivere all’infezione e, per tale motivo, sono considerati gli ospiti serbatoio. L’importanza economica della malattia di Aujeszky (AD) è cresciuta progressivamente, a partire dagli anni ’70 del secolo scorso, in conseguenza dei cambiamenti strutturali delle aziende suinicole e dell’aumento della movimentazione degli animali. La disponibilità di vaccini a marker negativo ha consentito, in molti Paesi, il controllo e l’eradicazione della malattia.
