Abstract

Nell’Italia comunale, l’informazione – soprattutto se riservata e se capace di portare vantaggio politico e militare contro i nemici – occupava un ruolo centrale, e i governi cittadini dedicarono sostanziali energie e risorse per il suo ottenimento. A partire dagli ultimi anni del Duecento si assiste nei Comuni alla creazione e diffusione di istituzioni volte alla gestione di «spias vel exploratores», soggetti dedicati al reperimento di informazioni di varia natura sui nemici, e spinti, quando necessario, anche a compiere azioni varie, quale il sabotaggio. Il presente volume si occupa di una di queste istituzioni originali, appartenente a uno dei pochi Comuni la cui abbondanza di fonti documentarie e archivistiche ne consente lo studio: l’Officium Spiarum di Bologna.
