Il capitolo discute il nesso tra comportamento economico e relazioni sociali, sia in relazione alla teoria economica sottostante sia in relazione all'econometria necessaria all'identificazione del nesso, a partire da un filone di letteratura economica al quale si fa comunemente riferimento come new social economics o social interactions economics (Durlauf e Young 2001) e che ha ricevuto un notevole impulso nell’ultimo decennio.
