Abstract

La riflessione sui problemi della responsabilità individuale e della giustizia costituisce il nucleo più produttivo dell'intreccio tra letteratura e politica nel Settecento e fa dell'esperienza italiana un paradigma di valore europeo. Le opere poetiche e i trattati degli intellettuali italiani, da Pietro Verri ad Alfieri, da Monti a Manzoni, sviluppano temi di riflessione presenti in tutta Europa, e infiammano un dibattito cruciale e fondativo del pensiero politico moderno. In questo volume vengono raccolti per la prima volta alcuni casi cruciali di "varianti politiche d'autore", dagli scritti pubblicati sul «Caffè», con revisioni e decurtazioni per sfuggire alle maglie della censura, alle "Osservazioni sulla tortura" di Verri, dai trattati politici alfieriani e dalla "Vita", alle correzioni linguistico-politiche di Monti, fino al "Conte di Carmagnola": mutamenti di punti di vista maturati dentro la storia o contro la storia, ma sempre in un vivificante rapporto con il testo scritto, inteso come impronta digitale del pensiero creativo, ma anche come specchio in cui ogni autore ha unito la riflessione sulla propria individualità a quella sul mondo esterno.
