Abstract

Il pontificato di Francesco ha recuperato al linguaggio corrente un termine antico: misericordia, caro alla tradizione giudeo-cristiana, che rinvia al cuore compassionevole sia del Dio biblico, paziente con l’umanità, sia dell’uomo pio, che si china verso il prossimo. Ma l’espressione, come mostra il volume qui illustrato, si può prestare come interessante categoria interpretativa di scelte “politiche” che hanno segnato epoche e territori. Al termine dell’età patristica, Isidoro di Siviglia aveva illustrato il comportamento misericordioso come l’azione del compatire la miseria altrui propria del cuore reso misero dal dolore per la sorte dell’altro. E il medioevo cristiano, forte di questa lezione, trovò mille modi per declinare questa espressione nella spiritualità come pure nella vita sociale, facendo addirittura un uso politico della pratica misericordiosa per modellare la società. Quindici studiosi, coordinati da Pietro Delcorno, hanno approfondito sia le basi teoriche sia i risultati pratici di questa singolare politica della misericordia per l’arco di tempo che va dal medioevo alla prima età moderna.
