A Gondar con i posseduti, 2015

Abstract

The article presents some results of the field research carried out by the author in Ethiopia, Gondar 2015, at the house of Abba G.M. a wukabi bale possessed by the great tsar Seifou Tchenger, a well-known zar in the area. It is the same spirit that in the 1930s mainly possessed the bale zar Malkam Ayyahou, giving her considerable authority. The author relates the cults that have been celebrated at Gondar in the 1930s with those she has recently witnessed. Intimately involved in the rituals, she also presents the activity and the functions of the Azmari musicians accompanying the possession ceremonies, whose music today is also required in many festive circumstances and family occasions. She also focuses on the rhetorical formulas, the qene, uttered by the bale zars and expressing a knowledge that can only be deciphered by the most experienced connoisseurs of that culture.
