Abstract

Il carattere accogliente ed ospitale, che risale alle origini della città e ne costituisce l’essenza profonda, attraversa la lunga storia urbana e ricorre negli statuti delle città europee. Lo possiamo osservare, oltre che nei processi che hanno contribuito a generare le città, nelle stesse architetture dedicate all’accoglienza, a lungo considerata atto dovuto e, soprattutto, gratuito: dall’ospitalità caritatevole di matrice ecclesiastica, nell’alto medioevo, all’accoglienza laica inquadrabile nel fenomeno della «religione civica» delle città comunali. Il saggio ripercorre, attraverso le trasformazioni del concetto di ospitalità, la configurazione medievale degli spazi urbani ed architettonici destinati ad accogliere pellegrini, malati, poveri, nomadi e migranti.
