La personalità di Dunant, la sua fede e il suo calvinismo del "Risveglio"

Abstract

Il presente contributo ricostruisce il background storico-sociale del fondatore della Croce Rossa, Jean Henry Dunant. Il primo paragrafo riassume la storia politica, sociale ed economica di Ginevra, sua città natale, dal Medioevo fino alla metà dell'Ottocento. il secondo paragrafo sviluppa un'esposizione dei principi fondamentali del calvinismo, religione di Stato di Ginevra, ed in particolare del "Risveglio", una corrente calvinista sorta all'inizio dell'Ottocento, a cui aderirono sia la famiglia di Dunant sia egli stesso. Il terzo ed ultimo paraagrafo ricostruisce invece la vita di Dunant dalla nascita (8 maggio 1820) al 1859, anno in cui ebbe la prima ispirazione dell'idea di Croce Rossa. Vi si sottolineano in particolare gli sviluppi del suo pensiero religioso, la sua attività filantropica ed il suo ruolo rilevante nell'associazionismo, in particolare nella fondazione della YMCA.
