Abstract

L’epoca di mezzo è un periodo molto ricco di teorie esplicite sul linguaggio, elaborate nell’ambito delle discipline del trivio (soprattutto grammatica e logica), e di riflessioni sull’uso del linguaggio nelle discipline teologiche e scientifiche. Il punto di partenza delle teorie medievali è senz’altro il De interpretatione di Aristotele nella traduzione e interpretazione, fortemente influenzata da Porfirio e intrisa di neoplatonismo, di Severino Boezio (Lorenzetti 2013). Altre tradizioni, come quella risalente ad Agostino di Ippona e ai grammatici latini Donato e Prisciano, si intrecciano strettamente a questa linea genealogica principale, producendo una messe di posizioni e teorie diversificate e originali. Dati i limiti di spazio, non si è potuto rendere conto nella loro ampiezza di tutti i contributi medievali, né dei numerosissimi studi che li hanno fatti conoscere, limitandoci a toccare autori e correnti principali tra i secoli XI e XIV: Anselmo di Aosta, Pietro Abelardo, la Scuola Porretana, la teologia tomista, i Modisti, Guglielmo di Ockham e Giovanni Buridano).
