Si propone qui un'origine e un significato diversi da quelli correnti per l'espressione "commedia dell'arte". Non dunque "commedia dei professionisti" come, da Benedetto Croce in poi si è sempre sostenuto, ma,, coerentemente al senso in cui la parola arte era all'epoca usata, "commedia di eccellenza". E forse non è estraneo all'espressione anche l'intimo rapporto che al tempo intercorreva fra arte e teatro.
