SEDIMENTOLOGIA E TETTONICA DELLA SUCCESSIONE CLASTICA DELLA VAL MEDUNA (PREALPI CARNICHE, PN)

Abstract

The study concerns the sedimentological and tectonical analysis of terrigenous valley oor deposits outcropping beside the Torrent Meduna between the villages of Tramonti di Sotto and Meduno (PN). € e main interesting and best exposed area is in the Col Ventous-Ponte Racli stretch, located along the external front of the Carnic Pre-Alps. Two di erent lithosomes have been identi‚fied in the thick clastic stratigraphic succession of the Meduna Valley oor (Case del Bianco Conglomerate and Ponte Racli Conglomerate); they are partially covered by recent uvio-glacial deposits (Arba Subsyntheme, Sequals Syntheme) and unconformably rest on the strongly deformed succession of Mesozoic-Paleogenic age. € e Ponte Racli Conglomerate consists of repeated cyclic uvial-deltaic-lacustrine sequences (>100 m thick) arranged in a continuous succession with few internal erosion surfaces and perfectly exposed in the western part of the study area (Col Ventous). On the opposite side, in the eastern part, Ponte Racli Conglomerate records several clear gravitational deformations linked to syn-sedimentary fault activity that is well legible in the outcrop. € The further left -transpressive reactivation of some of these structures leads to a tectonic inversion. Lacking palaeontological evidences and radiometric dating, the tectonical and sedimentological data of Ponte Racli Conglomerate have been used as indirect clues to tentatively assign an age to the lithosome. A retro-dating of the unit arises: instead of the Quaternary placing (Upper Pleistocene), as indicated on indirect basis by previous Authors, here it is located generically to the Upper Miocene (late Messinian) - Pliocene s.l. interval.
