Abstract

Il libro descrive un percorso di conoscenza, a più voci, sul significato che la costruzione della città moderna ha avuto nella fase più impegnativa della modernizzazione di un grande e millenario paese come l’India postcoloniale. Chandigarh, la nuova capitale del Punjab, rappresentò appieno quel progetto politico e culturale, espressione, nelle parole del Primo Ministro Jawaharlal Nehru “... del nostro genio creativo, quello che stavo fiorendo nel momento della conquista di una nuova libertà”. Sei tipi residenziali, progettati da Pierre Jeanneret, Jane B.Drew, e E. Maxwell Fry per i settori 16 e 19 di Chandigarh, vero e proprio microcosmo delle idee di urbanistica e di progettazione del team Chandigarh, vengono studiati, analizzati e ricostruiti attraverso disegni e modelli, offrendo al lettore una sintesi dei loro caratteri architettonici e spaziali.
