Abstract

Il volume si collega alla realizzazione del museo dei Cappuccini nel complesso monumentale del convento dei Frati Cappuccini di via Veneto a Roma. L’autore, che fa parte del comitato scientifico incaricato di costruire e gestire il percorso museale e espositivo di tale progetto, propone alcune considerazioni sui sistemi di committenza, produzione e valutazione delle immagini della Chiesa cattolica dopo il Concilio di Trento. In equilibrio instabile tra le severe esigenze della Regola e la necessità di splendore dei “signori benefattori” l’ordine di Cappuccini elaborò una politica artistica complessa. Da un lato si può constatare una produzione “autarchica” caratterizzata dalla lunga durata, da una circolazione internazionale e dalla continua alternanza tra le opposte esigenze di qualità e quantità. Dall’altro va sottolineata la presenza nel convento e nella chiesa di Via Veneto di opere di assoluto prestigio come, ad esempio, il San Francesco in meditazione di Caravaggio o il San Michele Arcangelo di Guido Reni.
