Giovanni Pascoli dal socialismo rivoluzionario al socialismo nazionalistico

Abstract

Le idee politiche di Giovanni Pascoli hanno avuto due periodi molto diversi. Nel primo, dal 1872 al 1882, è stato un rivoluzionario, negli anni in cui il socialismo di Andrea Costa non aveva ancora scelto la via parlamentare. Pascoli faceva una vita semiclandestina, scriveva odi inneggianti l’uccisione dei ricchi, fece tre mesi di carcere per avere partecipato a una manifestazione a favore di compagni arrestati. Dopo la laurea le sue idée politiche cambiarono profondamente e seguirono i principi di un socialismo umanitario che non voleva la lotta di classe e invitava alla pace tra tutti gli uomini. Soprattutto dal 1906, quando ereditò la cattedra che fu di Carducci all’Università di Bologna, diventò il poeta cantore della Patria, scrivendo poesie di argomento risorgimentale. Il suo socialismo diventà «nazionalistico», e nel 1911 finì per essere favorevole anche all’impresa coloniale di Libia. Il saggio segue queste fasi soprattutto attraverso poesie scritte nelle diverse stagioni.
