PCV2 shedding after challenge by infected semen in PCV2 vaccinated and non-vaccinated conventional gilts.

Abstract

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is endemic in swine herds and both viremia and shedding are demonstrated in newborn as well as in adult pigs. The reduction of PCV2 circulation is a protective strategy to be attained by several direct and indirect prophylactic measures. The objectives of this paper is to evaluate the viremia and virus shedding in conventional gilts vaccinated (n = 6) or non-vaccinated (n = 6) against PCV2 coming from a PCV2 positive farm, and challenged during artificial insemination by experimentally PCV2 infected semen. The data were compared with the results of 3 non-vaccinated and non-challenged gilts included as field controls. Viremia and virus shedding quantified by real time PCR, were evaluated in blood samples and in nasal, vaginal and rectal swabs, collected weekly from insemination to 50 days of pregnancy. After insemination with PCV2 infected semen, compared to non-vaccinated and control gilts, vaccinated animals showed a very occasional viremia and a significant reduction of the frequency of virus shedding by nasal, rectal and vaginal routes. Results regarding fetal protection will be included in the full paper.
