Il saggio ripercorre la lenta ma risoluta affermazione della borghesia professionale nella Bologna otto-novecentesca e individua nella presenza dell'Università la principale ragione di questo successo, che portò soprattutto l'elite degli avvocati e dei medici ad occupare posti di prestigio nella pubblica amministrazione e nel tessuto economico cittadino.
