In the essay: 'European Philology, Romance Philology and National Philologies' we question, both from a methodological and political point of view and by means of historical examples and philological models, the value of the discipline of modern Romance philology. In particular, examples from the experiences of authoritative masters are commented on: Aurelio Roncaglia, Cesare Segre, Alberto Varvaro and Roberto Antonelli.
