The School in the Middle

Abstract

In 2015, Italian law number 107 instituted the “School building data portal” which made images depicting the conditions of the nation’s schools available for the first time. The statistics portrayed a bleak situation. About 65% of Italy’s schools was built before 1976 (12.7% before 1946) and only 10% after 1991. Of approximately 40,000 school buildings, over 50% (average) necessitate urgent or very urgent maintenance work to comply with earthquake regulations and energy efficiency and safety requirements. In reality, recent national and regional regulatory measures have been numerous and important, funding more than 21 different initiatives with over 9.5 billion euros. In many regions, these resources were used to fully restore a large number of buildings in contexts often burdened by widespread and severe social and economic decay.
