Prevalence of Babesia caballi and Theileria equi infections in tolfetano horses [Prevalenza di Babesia caballi e Theileria equi in cavalli di razza tolfetana]

Abstract

98 cavalli di razza Tolfetana provenienti da 5 distinti allevamenti sono stati sottoposti a visita clinica ed a prelievo ematico dalla vena giugulare. I campioni di sangue sono stati utilizzati per indagini emocromocitometriche ed ematobiochimiche, nonché per immunodiagnosi mediante tecnica IFI e PCR, per evidenziare rispettivamente anticorpi nei confronti di Babesia caballi e Theileria equi e DNA parassitario. Nessun cavallo mostrava segni clinici riferibili a babesiosi al momento del prelievo, ne significative alterazioni ematologiche. All’esame sierologico, 92 campioni (93,88%) sono risultati positivi per T. equi e 44 (44,9%) per B. caballi; il tasso di coinfezione è stato del 47,82%. N. 18 cavalli hanno mostrato positività alla PCR (K = 0,03). Per quanto riguarda la sieropositività per B. caballi, non sono state osservate differenze statisticamente significative legate al sesso; l’età invece, si è dimostrata una variabile significativamente legata alla positività sierologica. I risultati lasciano supporre che i cavalli di razza Tolfetana tendano a sviluppare, oltre ad uno stato di premunizione, anche una naturale tolleranza verso i piroplasmi.
