Abstract

Le prologue de Cligès étale de manière plus qu’évidente la familiarité de Chrètien avec l’œuvre d’Ovide, de l’Ars Amandi aux Remedia Amoris, en passant par les Metamorphoses. On ne peut toutefois pas réduire la théorie amoureuse de Chrétien à l’actualisation du modèle ovidien. Un des indices suggérant des références bien plus vastes se trouve dans les versets 3843-3892 de Cligès. Dans ce passage du roman se manifeste une réflexion critique sur la relation entre amour et crainte, avec des renvois à une sentence fautivement attribuée à Publilius Syrus, en réalité tirée de l’Epistula ad Lucilium XLVII (17-18) de Sénèque, et un épigramme annoté dans un recueil de Versus Proverbiales, qui fait suite aux poèmes de Serlon de Wilton et se trouve tel quel dans l’un des exemples les plus anciens de la comédie élégiaque latine, l’Aulularia de Vital de Blois. On se propose de montrer que la disposition affective des personnages des romans de Chrétien est caractérisée aussi par la coexistence d’émotions contrastantes, en conformité d’une actualisation critique de connaissances codifiées dans les recueils de sentences, de proverbes et d’épigrammes.
