Abstract

Una interessante chiave di lettura delle narrazioni del presente capitolo può essere quella relativa alla dinamica di costruzione di senso nella dialettica spazio-tempo delle persone recluse. Il tempo della detenzione vive il paradosso di non trascorrere mai in termini di giorni ma di “volare” in termini di vita sprecata. La sensazione più evidente per il detenuto è quella di “sprecare” il proprio tempo; come racconta l’intervistato di uno studio condotto da Diana Medlicott: «my time here is just wasted, and wasting. I’m wasting time being here, I’m wasting time. I just sit around, or sleep. It’s a waste of my time... I talk to the others, sometimes we have a laugh. But we’re just wasting away» (1999: 222). Andare oltre il concetto di “istituzione totale” significa allora proporre modelli ed esperienze trattamentali per e con i detenuti con il doppio intento di riaffermare l’identità sociale di questi, attraverso un processo collegiale e responsabilizzante di revisione critica del loro vissuto, e di costruire una comunità penitenziaria che non possa prescindere dal considerare il detenuto prima di tutto come “persona” in termini di pietas solidale.
