"Variatio" e sinonimia in Fedro

Abstract

Il lavoro esamina un aspetto tra i più significativi e ricorrenti dello stile di Fedro, suggerito dalla stessa specificità del genere letterario prescelto, in cui dichiara di impegnarsi come un vero ‘poeta’: nella densa brevità dei suoi ‘racconti’ (fabulae) la variazione sinonimica evita le ripetizioni nominali o verbali dei medesimi personaggi o azioni (poikilia); nello stesso tempo si avverte la cura della proprietas nella scelta dei sinonimi secondo i momenti o lo sviluppo del racconto. Talora lo stesso procedimento è esteso a intere locuzioni relative ad azioni ripetute o compiute da persnaggi differenti. In questa attenzione lessicale e stilistica Fedro dà prova della sua formazione retorica e letteraria, tra i primi a utilizzare con meditata intelligenza la tradizione poetica classica appena costituitasi con Virgilio e Ovidio, mentre in parallelo rivitalizza sul piano metrico l’antico senario giambico.
