Abstract

Il testo analizza per la prima volta le figure femminili miniate nel Menologio di Basilio II come un corpus di figure femminili. Attraverso uno studio sistematico delle immagini delle sante, si dimostra come le raffigurazioni femminili corrispondano alle atlete per la fede descritte nella coeva agiografia. Impassibili di fronte alla sofferenza, anzi quasi liete di offrire il collo alla spada, le sante martiri contraddicono i canoni comportamentali tradizionalmente attribuiti alla donna nell'ambito della cultura bizantina, fortemente patriarcale. Invece, le sante, rinunciano alla vita normalmente prevista per loro (un matrimonio magari prestigioso, figli, ricchezze), per rifugiarsi nel chiuso di un cenobio, talvolta maschile, e conducono una vita ascetica ancora più dura di quella dei loro colleghi uomini, dimostrando la propria fede. Rispettando la coeva produzione agiografica, queste figure hanno delle caratteristiche specifiche da un punto di vista iconografico: talvolta hanno un corpo visibilmente femminile (capelli lunghi, seni prominenti), talaltra hanno una fisicità del tutto identica a quella degli uomini, dai quali non sono distinguibili.
