Information Retrieval, information retrieval, Questo contributo presenta il percorso che ha portato all’automatizzazione del reperimento dell’informazione – in inglese Information Retrieval (IR) – e alla sua evoluzione, con particolare riguardo a quanto successo in Italia. L’esposizione si articola in alcune sezioni: la sezione iniziale presenta qual’è il problema tradizionalmente affrontato dal reperimento dell’informazione. La sezione successiva mette in evidenza i contributi che, a partire dalla seconda metà degli anni Quaranta, hanno favorito la nascita del reperimento dell’informazione automatizzato. Fa seguito la sezione che descrive i componenti, ovvero gli elementi costitutivi dell’IR che la ricerca accademica e industriale hanno individuato e sui quali, per poter passare dal reperimento dell’informazione tradizionale all’IR, si è dovuta raggiungere una visione generale e condivisa. È stato infatti necessario, prima di tutto, concettualizzare quali aspetti del processo di reperimento potevano essere automatizzati e solo successivamente l’automatizzazione di questi elementi costitutivi ha rappresentato l’insieme delle sfide che il settore ha dovuto affrontare. Segue la sezione che presenta l’evoluzione storica dell’Information Retrieval, che negli anni Cinquanta è rintracciabile negli Stati Uniti, mentre dagli anni Sessanta interessa anche l’Italia; quindi, è a partire da quegli anni che ci si concentra sullo sviluppo dell’IR nel nostro Paese fino a giungere ai primi anni del secolo attuale, dove la trattazione si ferma per evitare di ricadere nella cronaca che esula dalla storia. La preparazione di questo contributo è stata possibile grazie alla ricerca sistematica di documenti d’archivio che hanno consentito di rintracciare scritti, studi e relazioni originali che non ci risulta siano stati documentati in precedenza.
