SUMMARY In the month of June 1998, 15.000 sterlets (Acipenser ruthenus), average weight 1g, intensively produced by a farm of the Po Plain close to Modena, were stricken with a sudden and heavy mortality (30% in the space of 30 hours). All affected fish exhibited similar clinical signs characterised by thinning, abdominal dropsy, ataxia and lethargy. 20 dying specimens were submitted in laboratory to necroscopsy and full parasitological, microbiological, histopathological examinations. Both perioral and perianal erythema and suffusions at the bases of the pectoral and ventral fins represented external lesions. Internally, anaemia of the gills with petechias, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly with pallor were observed. Microscopic lesions were characterised by hypertrophy, hyperplasia of globet cells of the skin, haemangiectasia of the gills, endoenteritis, enlarged sinusoids in the liver, degeneration of the tubules of kidney. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from all affected fish.
