Abstract

Il contributo focalizza l'attenzione sul mito di Penteo, narrato nel libro 3 delle Metamorfosi di Ovidio. La trattazione della vicenda da parte di Ovidio so struttura in una sequenza di scene descrittive influenzate dal modello introdotto dalle Baccanti di Euripide. Tale sviluppo dei fatti è confermato anche dalla tradizione iconografica greco-romana. In particolare la fonte ovidiana si distacca dal modello euripideo nel momento in cui descrive "Agave che esibisce tra le mani la testa di Penteo". Proprio questo tema trova un discreto successo in una serie di manufatti romani datati tra il I secolo a.C. e il II sec. d.C. e non si esclude che Ovidio, sviluppandolo letterariamente, abbia contribuito (insieme ad altri media) alla sua diffusione. La macabra punizione di Penteo, colpevole di aver voluto opporsi ad un culto che più di tutti gli altri portava all'annullamento di ogni distinzione di genere, età e stato sociale, doveva, nel contesto augusteo, alludere al timore di sovversioni e mescolanze etnico-sociali e richiamare alla memoria lo scandalo "de bacchanalibus" del 186 a.C., fortemente attualizzato in età augustea dagli eventi disonorevoli che avevano visto come protagonista Giulia.
