Il testo introduce nei primi due capitoli le principali teroie sul nesso tra devianza e ordine sociale e presenta il sistema penale come strumento selettivo di definizione, gestione e controllo della criminalità. Nei successivi due capitoli il testo si concentra sulla relazione tra svantaggio sociale e adattamenti devianti, con particolare attenzione al legame tra reazione istituzionale, pena detentiva e identità deviante.
