El final de las villae en Hispania (siglos IV-VII)

Abstract

Il volume si presenta come la prima sistematica catalogazione e analisi delle trasformazioni che hanno interessato l'architettura rurale residenziale nell'Impero d'Occidente, che hanno portato all'estinzione del sistema economico antico basato sulle villae romane. La ricerca tenta di spiegare questi cambiamenti al fine di comprendere la trasformazione dei modelli di insediamento, il sistema di proprietà e la gestione della terra dal V all’VIII secolo, e le modifiche delle classi contadine e delle elite tardo-antiche, che porteranno a nuove classi sociali del Medioevo. Come luogo del caso studio è stata scelta la Penisola Iberica, con siti di cronologia tra il tardo III secolo e l'inizio dell’VIII. L'analisi si basa sullo studio diretto delle evidenze archeologiche in ambito rurale (124 in totale) con fasi tarde di ocupazione senza dimenticare però l’analisi delle fasi di monumentalizzazione precedente che portarono al cosidetto boom delle ville tardoantiche in Hispania. Il confronto con gli stessi fenomeni documentati in altre aree del mediterraneo occidentale (Italia, Gallia e le isole Britaniche principalmente) permette di capire la vastità del fenomeno e il suo significato per la fine dell’Imperio e la nascita dell’Europa medievale.
