Altruismo

Abstract

Il termine altruismo, derivato dalla parola italiana altrui, è stato coniato nel 1852 da Compte, uno dei padri della sociologia. Nella tradizione positivista dell'autore, così come nei suoi sviluppi successivi, l'altruismo viene concepito come fenomeno necessario alla conservazione della specie, laddove l'egoismo punta alla mera conservazione dell'individuo. L'altruismo assume allora le fattezze di un ideale morale, la suprema legge che dovrebbe governare il mondo degli eventi sociali. Nell'ambito delle scienze sociali il comportamento altruistico verrà pertanto usato, non senza ambiguità e non sempre a proposito, come contraltare delle prospettive edonistiche e utilitaristiche, alimentando le controversie sulla natura umana (egoistica versus altruistica). Sulla base di queste premesse teoriche, il saggio espone i principali contributi offerti dalla psicologia sociale in materia di comportamento prosociale (volontariato e condotta d’aiuto in situazioni d’emergenza).
