Zoogoneticus tequila is a freshwater fish, member of the Goodeinae subfamily. This species is endemic to the springs of Rio Teuchitlan, in central Mexico and classified as “critically endangered” on the basis of the IUCN Red List criteria. A useful collaboration involving Fish Ark Mexico project and the international volunteer conservation program Goodeid Working Group allowed the development of a conservation project based on ex situ and in situ studies aimed to the final reintroduction into its original habitat.
