Abstract

«Dionysus in 69 è roba forte, ma chiunque vuole capire che direzione sta prendendo il teatro contemporaneo dovrebbe vederlo»: così il New York Times commentava la dirompente ed entusiasmante creazione del gruppo diretto da una delle più importanti figure del teatro di ricerca della seconda metà del XX secolo, Richard Schechner. Libero adattamento e re-interpretazione radicale delle Baccanti, lo spettacolo combinava il testo euripideo con esercizi dal ‘teatro povero’ di Grotowski, un rituale della popolazione Asmat della Nuova Guinea, materiali e improvvisazioni elaborate dai membri del gruppo. Prodotto di un momento storico di accelerata e convulsa transizione socio-culturale, segnata dall’opposizione forte tra establishment da un lato e controcultura giovanile e movimenti per i diritti civili dall’altro, la performance aprì la strada a numerosi tratti distintivi della sperimentazione teatrale dell’epoca: partecipazione del pubblico, progettazione e utilizzo ‘ambientale’ dello spazio scenico, decostruzione del testo letterario, struttura drammaturgica aperta, nudità dei performer, rotazione dei ruoli.
