Abstract

Attraverso la scoperta dei manoscritti di "The Art of the Theatre", il breve dialogo di Edward Gordon Craig che, per molti versi, apre la stagione della riflessione teorica del teatro del Novecento, il saggio ricostruisce i mecanismi di formazione e di messa a fuoco del pensiero teorico di Craig. I due manoscritti preparatori sono analizzati in dettaglio per cogliere la dinamica che è intercorsa nella visione teorica di Craig e giungere, poi, al testo definitivo a stampa di cui si ripercorrono le principali linee tematiche. In tal modo, il saggio presenta quella che potrebbe essere definita la "messa in forma" del pensiero del moderno teatrale, vale a dire ricostruisce come le iniziali tensioni verso una autonoma e liberatoria autonomia del teatro rispetto alla letteratura si siano trasformate in una precisa asserzione di linguaggio.
