Abstract

Along with Puer 4 annorum and Puer 5 annorum that precede it, Senex caecus, the fourth of the five enxemplos that in the final part of the Sendebar the prince offers to his father the king and to the court, constitutes a mini-cycle dedicated to wisdom, significantly centered on puer-senex topos. With this story, which by the structural articulation and the development of the plot, placed at the service of a wide didactic purpose («Señor, non te di este enxenplo sinon por que sepas las artes del mundo»), is one of the most complex of the collection, the «Infante» addresses the theme of the revelation of deception by the wise counselor and good counsel, proving an ability to argue and the possession of a higher knowledge, not only with respect to the slanderous stepmother and to the «privados», but also to the same Alcos, the knowledge, precisely, proper to a king.
