The authors examine the meaning of menarche, startinf from a review of the major contributions to this issue in the psychoanalytic literature. In contrast to the known Freudian assumptions on female sexuality, the authors suggest an interpretation of menarche, in the light of present psychoanalytic views, related to the bodily and somatic female specificity and to the links with the social, cultural and cognitive stage of sexual development.
