Volontariato e pensionamento.

Abstract

Volunteerism, an altruistic and prosocial behavior, can support the retired, who - in stopping working activities – may lose social and professional identity. Voluntary activity promotes group memberships and the acquisition of a new social identity. Meeting other people, aiming at achieving a common goal towards the benefit of those who need help, promotes self-esteem and the consolidation of the self. According to Erikson, helping young people by volunteering may develop social generativity and the acquisition of the elderly life cycle. Following, three types of volunteering for retired people are presented: a. the intergenerational group of the Nestore Association; b. the retired group Ferrero Ferrero-Foundation; c. the grandparents and grandchildren group members of voluntary Associations in Viterbo, active in the cultural intergenerational tourism project, activated by the Generational Meetings Laboratory of Milan’s University.
