Abstract

La controversia iconoclasta è tra i fenomeni storico-teologici più complessi e affascinanti dell’universo bizantino. Il forte carisma, dimostrato da un pullulare di studi dal suo originarsi fino alla ricerca contemporanea, si appella a quella peculiare combinazione creatasi dalla convergenza tra teologia e storia, speculazioni teoretiche e lotte di potere tra Oriente e Occidente. Dispute di natura squisitamente speculativa, volte a preservare il dogma cristologico, si intrecciarono con scontri di matrice politico-economica che coinvolsero in scontri spesso aspri il governo imperiale e il mondo monastico. La complessa articolazione del fenomeno iconoclasta giustifica dunque una secolare ricerca dai tratti poliedrici che, prendendo spunto da peculiari segmenti in gioco, finì generalmente per analizzare il fenomeno solo da una visuale incapace di fare interagire le molteplici forze in campo e, specialmente, minimizzò o addirittura ignorò il ruolo giocato dall’indagine teologica nella discussione sulla liceità delle immagine sacre figurative.
