L'Italia tra Triplice Alleanza e Intesa

Abstract

Il Congresso di Berlino del 1878 e le successive alleanze tra le maggiori potenze europee diedero vita a un lungo periodo di pace che terminò con le guerre balcaniche e la prima guerra mondiale. L’epoca a cavallo tra i due secoli fu contraddistinta da molteplici fattori, esclusivi e spesso mutevoli. L’Impero tedesco, dapprima promotore e fulcro del¬l’equi¬librio continentale, si trovò durante i primi anni del Novecento schiacciato sotto il peso della sua stessa crescita economica. Desideroso di rivaleggiare con le maggiori potenze uscì dall’isolamento bismarckiano per intraprendere una politica di potenza che trascinò l’Europa in guerra. Tra il 1914 e il 1918 l’Europa fu il principale teatro della prima guerra mondiale. Lo scontro vide protagoniste le grandi potenze continentali per il controllo di spazi, risorse e per la conquista dei mercati, in più rivendicazioni di tipo risorgimentale (la “cacciata dello straniero” dalla propria “patria”) e nazionalistico costituirono ulteriori elementi di frizioni. Al fronte milioni di giovani soldati si combatterono sfruttando l’inedita abbondanza di armi forgiate dalle nuove industrie. L’Italia, prima vicina alla disfatta con Caporetto, e infine vittoriosa, affiorò dal conflitto con un più diffuso sentimento di identità nazionale.
