La guerra fredda della penicillina

Abstract

Alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale l’allora direttore dell’Istituto superiore di Sanità Domenico Marotta decise di creare a Roma un centro di ricerca integrato legato ai processi di manifattura della penicillina, nell’ambito degli aiuti per la ricostruzione post-bellica. La decisione era stata presa in seguito a un parere di Ernst Chain, premio Nobel nel 1945 per le scoperte sulla chimica della penicillina, chiamato poi da Marotta in Italia come figura cruciale per lo sviluppo del progetto che mirava alla produzione statale dell’antibiotico. L’iniziativa di Marotta e il ruolo di Chain, che aveva avuto contatti con l’Unione Sovietica e paesi del blocco sovietico, permise all’Italia di diventare uno snodo fondamentale per l’innovazione e lo sviluppo dell’industria farmaceutica internazionale, in un mondo diviso dalla guerra fredda e in cui la penicillina era più che una terapia
