Abstract

Il nervo facciale (VII nervo cranico) è un nervo misto composto da una radice motoria (muscoli facciali, platisma stiloioideo e ventre posteriore del digastrico), una sensitiva (sensibilità gustativa, cute del padiglione e del condotto uditivo esterno) e fibre parasimpatiche secretorie (ghiandole sottomandibolare, sottolinguale e lacrimale). La funzione primaria del nervo facciale è quella di esprimere i comportamenti volontari e le emozioni spontanee del viso attraverso il controllo motorio dei muscoli del volto. La seconda funzione è quella di contribuire all’alimentazione e all’articolazione fonetica nel linguaggio, strettamente dipendente dal coordinamento dei muscoli del distretto inferiore del volto con numerosi altri gruppi muscolari orofaringei. Qualsiasi danno delle componenti nervose centrali o periferiche del VII nervo cranico può indurre una paralisi omolaterale o più raramente bilaterale, parziale o completa dei muscoli del volto, associata a sintomi collaterali legati alle componenti sensitiva ed eccitosecretrice. La paralisi facciale è vissuta drammaticamente dal paziente. L’alterazione della mimica facciale e l’asimmetria inducono problematiche di carattere estetico, e la difficoltà di esprimere in modo normale emozioni e comportamenti sociali. L’insieme di tutte le alterazioni descritte determinano un progressivo disagio che altera i comportamenti sociali e può, in alcuni casi, portare all’isolamento e alla depressione
