Abstract

Dalla metà del XIX secolo le Esposizioni Universali e Internazionali, più o meno frequentate e più o meno ampie, hanno avuto come scopo comune quello di esibire al mondo tutto quello che veniva considerato portatore di identità nazionale. La longevità e l'importanza di tali manifestazioni è confermata dal successo dell'Expo di Shanghai 2010 visitata da 70 milioni di persone. Aspettando l'esposizione universale di Milano 2015 in queste pagine si è dedicato qualche approfondimento a temi prettamente storico-artistici come le vicende della pittura francese all'esposizione di Parigi del 1855, lo sviluppo del disegno industriale, dei nuovi materiali e dell'istruzione artistica in rapporto alle esposizioni, le immagini satiriche e i fumetti legati a quegli eventi, e a temi più trasversali come la moda maschile e femminile del tempo, le donne alle esposizioni e le esposizioni delle donne. Il libro anticipa la pubblicazione della ricerca La partecipazione dell'Italia alle Esposizioni Universali del XX secolo.
