Corea del Sud: “Calma mattutina” o “Corea dinamica”?

Corea del Sud: “Calma mattutina” o “Corea dinamica”?

Abstract

The article highlights the differences in the perception of the image of Korea in the West and in Korea itself. The self-image that Korea projects domestically and abroad is the complex result of the ways in which Koreans first of all conceive of the State, comprising also the intellectual sphere. This reality is, on the one hand, tendentially Confucian, based on the values of collectivism, hierarchy, verticality and patriarchy, and the other reflects the influence of phenomena of Western origin, such as globalization, individualism, competitiveness, and profit-making more geared to the individual than the group, values which have quickly led to an overhaul of such concepts as in’gan, in-group, out-group, from which Korea draws the strength that has enabled it to play an important strategic role in the process of globalization, since they “legitimize” the right of a certain group to preserve status and power. On the other hand, for the West, Korea is bound to the special fate of being “a bypassed country”, located geographically (a concept that extends to its history, economy, politics and cultural life) between the two giants of the Orient, China and Japan, by which Korea has been traditionally duped. The article analyses the self-images that Korea creates in its visual media, from captioned video-clips, photos and other images found on websites, and identifies parallel paths of communication, which can be analysed from an etic and emic viewpoints of cultural content whose meaning is mediated, since it is located within dynamics aimed at modifying the identity-image of Korea, in order to adapt it to the norms of globalization.
