Abstract

Nella complessa catena di eventi che conducono all’apoptosi, i mitocondri più che ogni altro organello cellulare assumono ruolo di primaria importanza. L’Autore descrive la rilevanza di fenomeni inducenti un danno mitocondriale e l’eventuale presenza di sostanze che possono influenzarli in qualche modo. Negli ultimi anni, si è focalizzata l’attenzione su uno di questi composti e su i suoi derivati: la Carnitina. L’Autore riporta le diverse e importanti funzioni fisilogiche svolte da questa sostanza: induttrice dei fattori di crescita, aumento del metabolismo mitocondriale, azione protettiva sull’integrità di membrana del mitocondrio, incremento d’interazione proteica tra la membrana cellulare ed il citoscheletro, inibizione dell’attivazione delle caspasi ed attività rafforzante di bcl-2 sulla morte cellulare, attività antiossidante, ruolo sui linfociti e azione sui proteasomi. Tutto ciò al fine di una efficace neuroprotezione nella malattia glaucomatosa.
