Since the early history of cinema, film-makers and directors have taken an interest in the narrative work of Dickens. Such an interest is shown as rooted in the cinematic qualities of Dickens's prose, highlighted by great directors (Griffith, Eisenstein). A milestone in Dickens's works film renditions is seen in the 1948 film by David Lean. This study specifically argues for Lean's masterly handling of film possibilities and conventions in translating the text in visual language, both when it deals with giving the feel of the metropolis, and when it selects in the plot, to retain its essential features.
