Abstract

Il libro ripercorre la storia della sociologia visuale, area disciplinare complessa e relativamente giovane, che si occupa da alcuni decenni dell'universo delle immagini. Nata negli Stati Uniti, la visual sociology è scienza di osservazione e di analisi con un campo operativo assai vasto, che spazia dalla fotografia al film; il sociologo visuale è colui che prende in esame materiali già esistenti (sociologia sulle immagini) o che si avvale di tecniche di analisi ormai consolidate, per divenire “costruttore” di icone (sociologia con le immagini).Nel suo lavoro l'Autrice traccia il quadro della disciplina sia a livello diacronico che sincronico, con particolare attenzione all'ultimo decennio, dando rilievo a quelle forme speciali di filmato quali il film etnografico. Riserva uno sguardo analitico al ruolo della sociologia visuale all'interno della sociologia italiana, al suo divenire disciplina accademica, e alle interessanti attività di laboratorio che si svolgono in alcune Università italiane. Al contributo teorico che struttura il volume si addizionano le interviste ai maggiori esponenti della sociologia visuale italiana e di quella statunitense, per fare il punto sul percorso e l'evoluzione della disciplina. Si tratta di una prospettiva nuova e di un materiale di ricerca inedito, grazie ai quali il lettore può ricostruire i fondamenti teorico-metodologici di questa disciplina dalla viva voce degli studiosi.

The book traces the history of visual sociology, complex and relatively young subject area, which is responsible for some decades the universe of images. Born in the United States, visual sociology is a science of observation and analysis of operating with a very wide field, ranging from photography to film, and the visual sociologist is someone who examines existing materials (sociology on the pictures) or uses analysis techniques are now well established, to become a "manufacturer" of icons (sociology with images.) In his work, the author traces the framework of the discipline at both diachronic and synchronic, with particular attention to the last decade, giving relief to those special forms of video such as ethnographic film. Reserve an analytical look at the role of visual sociology within sociology Italian, its becoming an academic discipline, and interesting lab activities that are carried out in several Italian universities. Contribution to the theoretical structure of the volume are added interviews with leading exponents of Italian visual sociology and the U.S., to make the point on the path and evolution of the discipline. It is a new perspective and an unpublished research material, through which the reader can reconstruct the theoretical and methodological foundations of this discipline from the voice of scholars.
