Territorio

Authors: Luigi Savio Margagliotta;
Abstract

Although it may seem difficult and perhaps even inconvenient to think of some kind of alignment involving all areas of knowledge, reflecting on the meaning, significance and value that the word “territory” holds in the field of architecture is today more necessary than ever, especially considering that within the discipline itself exist unresolved theoretical, thematic and even programmatic divergences surrounding the same concept. The current complexity and terminological divergence, which have increased over recent years, have indeed generated uncertainties in approaches and practices that, starting from different ways of understanding and defining the topic, have led to differing objectives and methodologies. The term territory has long since entered the common linguistic heritage. As often happens with words assigned complex meanings, it has sometimes been reductively filled of its real content, sometimes used to indicate wrongly different concepts, and sometimes conflated with notions of landscape or environment generating understandable confusion. Undertaking the task of clarification, reduction and unification of the terminology with respect to a concept that defines a concrete field of action therefore concerns not only a linguistic matter, but above all a necessary condition for the definition of a design process, which will be able to thus refer to an object with clear conceptual outlines.
