Simbologia dell’acqua nella Calabria jonica

Simbologia dell’acqua nella Calabria jonica

Abstract

Water, due to its physical and chemical properties, is mutable and appears in nature in various forms. These intrinsic characteristics inevitably influence the ways in which different cultures conceive and interpret it. Drawing on a critical analysis of Southern Italian folkloric literature-particularly sources related to the history of Calabrian popular traditions-as well as ethnographic data collected in the field, this study examines how communities along the Calabrian Ionian Coast have developed a symbolic understanding of water according to a dual and complementary framework: miraculous water and malevolent water. This duality reflects how the element shapes both the natural and cultural horizon of these communities.
