Fine vita e Costituzione italiana

Abstract

The text explores the ethical, legal and personal concept of "care", intrinsically linked to the human being and his human dignity. On the one hand, in fact, every human being, from the moment of birth, has been cared for by someone, which is therefore a condition of existence itself. On the other hand, taking care of someone reveals the importance of the person, deserving of attention regardless of the condition of need and weakness. This suggests that the dignity of the person is absolute, intrinsic, and exists even when the other is not self-sufficient or capable. It also reflects on the debate regarding assisted suicide. In particular, the legalization of euthanasia or assisted suicide, while appearing to be a gesture of respect for the patient's will, can create serious social pressure towards the most vulnerable and weaken the absolute value of human dignity, which also exists at the end of life, which should therefore not be suppressed but cared for. The appropriate response to therapeutic excesses and pain is palliative care, attentive to the physical, psychological, spiritual and social aspects of suffering.
