Abstract

L’appellativo di «papa di transizione» sembrerebbe a prima vista appropriato per descrivere il breve pontificato di Vittore III. Si potrebbe quasi dire che l’attenzione che Vittore III ha ricevuto sia stata direttamente proporzionale alla brevità del suo pontificato. Ma chi fu Vittore III? È possibile parlare di età vittoriana? Quale fu la sua importanza per lo sviluppo e la costruzione del papato del pieno medioevo? Queste sono alcune delle domande che ci guidano in questo libro, nato proprio attorno all’idea di esaminare alcuni aspetti del pontificato vittoriano che ebbero ripercussioni sui successivi sviluppi delle riforme. La scelta di Vittore quale pontefice imprimerà un imprevedibile e imprevisto indirizzo alle riforme, proseguito anche dai suoi successori, che ovviamente lo adatteranno alle loro sensibilità e al contesto in cui si troveranno a operare.
