Abstract

El arsénico encabeza la lista de los elementos más tóxicos en la naturaleza y puede ocasionar serios daños a la salud de los seres humanos, incluyendo cáncer. Por ello, en los últimos años, se han impuesto límites cada vez más restrictivos para este elemento, especialmente en lo que a agua potable se refiere. De hecho, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) recomienda un límite de 10 μg L-1 de As en el agua destinada al consumo humano. En este trabajo, se estudió el potencial de los fondos de café (SCG, del inglés Spent Coffee Grounds), de los residuos del prensado de la oliva (OP, del inglés olive pomace) y de los óxidos de manganeso (MnOx) como adsorbentes para la remoción del arsénico de agua sintéticamente contaminada. Mientras que los SCG y la OP son residuos provenientes de la alimentación y de la agricultura, respectivamente, con reconocida capacidad adsorbente, los MnOx constituyen un subproducto industrial.
